I just had to tell somebody and I know many of you are animal lovers. I'm a bit traumatised as a nasty dog attacked Trudy on the park this morning! It was bigger than her and I found a puncture wound on her back so took her to the vet. When she checked her over, she found two more. Poor little thing has had to have her back and neck shaved, antibiotic and pain killer injection. I've got to give her antibiotics for a week and bathe the wounds with salt water twice a day! She's sleeping peacefully under the desk at the moment, but the vet said she would because of the pain killer injection. The vet doesn't think she is in shock.... just me! They were great at the vets. The vetinary nurse even treated me with a cup of tea ! Fortunately Trudy is not in shock. The people who own the dastardly dog had only a few minutes earlier pulled it off another dog it was attacking, and then were silly enough to put it on a lead and hand it to their little boy who was about 6 and was immediately pulled over on the ice when it went for Trudy!! I can't believe how stupid people can be. They have given me their name and address and I have spoken to them on the phone and they are very willing to pay the bill which was £46. I feel a bit sorry for them, coming just at Christmas, but I did say that I wouldn't report it to the police. I took photos of the wounds and sent them a copy of those too. The other lady was so cross, I think she will report it! I don't think the other dog was hurt, it was bigger and had long hair - we couldn't find any bites on it anyway. Oh dear, what a morning. But at least she is going to be okay. Thanks for listening !! Ann "I cannot do everything. I accept that. Not being able to do everything is no excuse for doing nothing." ~ Helen Keller

Well what irresponsible owners they are. We have Bud muzzled at all times when he's out and not in an enclosed area but there's nothing much we can do about loose dogs. It is a shock to see an attack. I hope her wounds heal quickly and cleanly. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Glad to hear you and Trudy are feeling a bit better now - I'd have been in a state if I had seen this. Unfortunately, we hear about these things happening too often. My friend has just bought a puppy this year and has had to stop taking it to the local common as a group of teenage lads think this sort of thing is a funny game. I know you feel sorry for the family but maybe if you do let them pay the bill they will think twice about letting it happen again and will consider buying a muzzle for the dog if they can't control it. If you don't want to give them your address to send the money, you could just send them a copy of the pictures of the wounds to Trudy so they can see the extent of the injuries the dog has caused.

hi Ann,
Poor Trudy! What an awful thing to happen, I'm not surprised you were in shock! I hope her wounds heal well and she is soon back to her usual self. I also hope the other dog's family learn a lesson from this and never let it happen again.
Love and hugs for you and Trudy. Doreen xx

Oh Ann - poor Trudy and poor you. Glad the vet treated you both so well but it IS awful when our beloved pets are attacked. The owners MUST know what their dog is like and should have kept it on a lead. Don't feel sorry for them - perhaps this will have taught them a valuable lesson.
Much love to you both

Hi Ann, these people make me so angry!! they must know that the dog is not friendly with other dogs, wo keep in on the lead, with a responsible adult in charge, not a 6 year old child!! We have two shih tzus who are harmless, one is 17 years old, but he is kept on a lead as even though hes so old he tries to "attack" other dogs!! lol he obviously wont do any harm, but its still irresponsbile to let him loose knowing his temprament. Let the people pay the bill, I know it seems mean, but it may hopefully make them think twice in future!! Glad Trudy is ok though. BARBARA

Hi Ann,
Good to know that you and Trudy are OK and that she's on the road to recovery. I honestly believe that people who want to keep a dog should have a license to prove that they are responsible owners, these people are obviously not.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a painless New Year,
Love,

Ihope Trudy gets well soon. I cant stand stupid people who let their dogs run free when they know they are aggresive. I would be traumatised if my little yorkie or any dog was attacked.I think i would have to tell the police because it could happen again.Give trudy a hug from me. Kathleen Mc.

Oh, Ann, what an absolutely awful thing to happen; you must have been terrified, but thank goodness Trudy's injuries were treatable. It is gobsmacking how irresponsible some dog owners are.

Oh Ann, your post made me shiver as this happened to me when out with our dog, Flynn. I get so angry when this sort of thing happens, as there are people who really shouldn`t be allowed to have dogs, and have no idea how to control them. This happens more frequently than you think. I`m glad Trudy didn`t come off any worse, and hope she reponds well to the anti-biotics. Flynn was in the same boat - he`s a placid Golden Retriever, and I had him on the lead (pre-RA days) when a pit-bull went for him, dragging us both along the path. I should have let go of the lead, but panicked I suppose. The pit-bull was called Nero, and eventually ran off, but when Flynn tried to stand he was like Bambi, & couldn`t stop shaking. I phoned Nick, and he came & picked us up. It`s the only time I`ve ever had whisky at 4 pm!! Nick took him to the vet, and he was treated like Trudy. We rang the police, as the path we were on bordered a primary school, & I dread to think what the dog would have done to a small child. Flynn refused to walk that way for weeks afterwards. Give Trudy a pat from me & a lick from Flynn, and I hope you both feel better soon, it`s a horrible experience. Kathleen x

Hi Ann,
Hope doggy is feeling better and you are recovering from the shock. A couple of months ago my sheep were attacked and one was killed. We know who the people are as we have caught the dogs in the field before. When I got them the woman said that now they were not in the field I could not shoot them and then told the police they were not there at all. One of my sheep had 21 stitches in her leg. What really gets me is that she is a kennel club elite breeder and when I phoned them up to complain they were more concerned about me shooting the dogs! I told them my sheep are more important than their dogs. These dogs are Alaskan Malumutes so anyone please do not buy one as they have not only attacked my sheep but several dogs that the owners walk down the lane. The police are reluctant to do anything about it. These people have about ten dogs which are out of control. I have told them that I will kill the dogs if they are loose again. Any dog that attacks any thing should be put to sleep as it is very likely that the next thing they attack will be a person and it could easily be a child. I am an animal lover but I do think that the dangerous dogs act does not go far enough. These people should be fined substantial amounts and their dogs taken off them. They are not doing the dogs any favours either. Sorry to go on but this really winds me up. Have a very happy christmas and a painfree new year. Jayne

Just picked up on this Ann. It must have been such a shock for you.I hope Trudy is making a good recovery. I think you've been very generous in not reporting it. It worries me that it attacked twice so quickly- and that the owners were so stupid to let a 6 yr old hold onto it.
I wonder if it's happened before, and like Kathleen says, it could so easily happen again. Sorry- I'm not trying to make you feel guilty for not reporting it. Like Jayne, I feel so angry about irresponsible owners.
Anyway- rant over- I'd like to wish you, your family- and of course Trudy- a happy and restful Christmas
love
Maria

Hello Everyone, Thank you so much for your kind replies and support. I am pleased to say that Trudy doesn't seem to have any after effects. The wounds are healing and don't seem to be infected. She enjoys her tuna ... with a tablet hidden in it! I took her back to the park the next day, as much for myself as her as I didn't want to be too frightened to go there. The word had got around and the other dog-walkers are 'on the lookout' for the dastardly dog. The owners will be asked not to bring it again unless it is muzzled. The other lady has reported it - she was so cross, even though her dog wasn't physically hurt. Yes, I have sent the owners the bill, together with coloured photos of the wounds. Hopefully, they will think twice about their responsibilities in future. Jayne, so sorry to hear about your poor sheep. For those of you that don't know, Jayne has a lot of 'rescue' sheep that she cares for and they are her pets. It just makes you wonder what goes through the minds of these so-called 'dog breeders'. I think it is just £ signs ! Thanks again everyone. Hope your Christmas was peaceful and full of joy. Ann Sniff, woof, lick from Trudy Scrumptious "I cannot do everything. I accept that. Hi Ann, I have just read about Trudy, I am pleased to learn that she seems fine, and hope that you are ok, have you reported it to the police? perhaps they could find the dog and take the owners to court, they are not acting responsibly and should be made to pay for the vet bill love Kimxx

Hi Anne Sorry to hear about you and trudys trauma. Thankfully the people who owned the dog were responsible enough to give you their address and offer to pay the bill. Some people can be quite horrible and defensive when something like this happens. On one end of the scale dogs according to the RSPCA are used as wepons and some breed of dogs give street cred. II didnt like walking in parks because dogs are generally off the lead and you cannot be sure of the dogs temperment, whether it can get carried away with doggy instinct. I wish that people could be educated to know how to look after their dog. One day I was waiting for a bus and a dog off its lead just came running at me from the opposite side of the road. I complained to the lady owner telling her that I am afraid of dogs and I got a fright adn that through her own negligence her dog could have caused a traffic accident or could have got run over. She just started screaming at me.. Its times like this I think I am so middle aged and why bother. However on teh way back she had the dog on the lead and gave me a mouthful as she went past. I think it was probably a momentary slip and I probably wouldnt like somebody telling me what to do. Though it is moments like this that causes problems. The reason I dont have dogs is that as a child I had a bitch that was in heat and got surrounded by about 3 or 4 dogs barking and my mum had our dog in her arms. So when dogs run up to me or are running freely in my vicinity, I get freaked out, particularly if they are rothweilers, staffs and pitbulls. It seems that staffs are very popular. I wish smaller dogs like daschunds, spaniels and chichuawas were the more popular breeds. Jayne I hope these dogs will stop worrying your sheep and that you dont suffer to much stress and anxieties from it all. Happy new year to all

Happy new year to all The problem, that has been shown through out this thread is nothing to do with what breed the dog is but the responsibility or lack of from the people that own these dogs! There is nothing wrong with a Pitbull, Rottweiler, Alaskan Malamute or any other breed. A dog is a dog! It has to be trained and dealt with as such. All these dogs that transgress have an owner that quite frankly shouldn't be in charge of a paper hat!! It is stupid and ignorant to blame any BREED of dog. And as for destroying the dog, you'd be better off destroying the irresponsible morons that attempt to keep dogs whether they be Pitbulls, Alaskan Malamutes or yorkshire terriers!!! Stewart. ( And a happy New Year to everyone! ) A friend is someone who knows all about you but loves you anyway!
